SPIRITUAL MUSIC
Thomas Ronkin, this magazine’s translator, is also an electronic music composer. He just released the first CD of his works, entitled “Within, Distance”.
Music is a constant of my being, a vital element as important as air or water. Music runs through my brain like blood runs through my veins. After 25 years of improvising on the piano, and 15 years of use of synthetisers, I have finally finished a 58-minute compact disc of my works, itself 4 years in the making.
My influences are many: Mahler, Bruckner and Chostakovich in classical music; Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Steve Reich and Klaus Schulze in ambient, repetitive or “space” music.
The five pieces of the disc add up to a somewhat heterogeneous collection, a reflection of my contradictory aspirations. There are three slow movements that are crepuscular, introspective and reflexive. They tend to provoke nostalgia and unleash long-forgotten memories. Listening to these movements, an Italian lady once said to me: “Tomaso, e una musica tristissima”.
There is also a mid-tempo piece, of pure repetitive music. Here we have an interplay of overlaid sequenced notes, creating a web of tones and patterns. The last movement of the disc, lasting more that 23 minutes, is a fast and assertive piece, filled with dramatic percussive and stereophonic effects, as well as unexpected key changes. It is a relentless journey toward infinity, ending with an apocalyptic desintegration, as if one was being sucked into a black “hole”.
Every note on this disc was composed on a MIDI music computer.

The music of Thomas Ronkin is divinely beautiful. Listening to it, we can feel the joy that reigns in the boundless dimensions of the higher world. It opens the doors of infinity to us.
